Abstract

The article addresses lingual means of representing value-concepts in archaic Germanic, Celtic and Slavonic languages. The article discusses these concepts’ role in the categorization of the world and suggests a universalia-oriented systemic interpretation of the said phenomena. The respective matrix applied for interpreting universal patterns of informational exchange is introduced. Special attention is paid to the cognitive and linguo-cultural background of the units under analysis.

Oleksandr Kolesnyk, Kyiv Borys Grinchenko University, Kyiv, Ukraine

Oleksandr Kolesnyk is a professor in the Department of Germanic Philology at Borys Hrinchenko University of Kyiv, Ukraine. His teaching and research work relate to areas of Semiotics, Historical Linguistics, Cognitive Linguistics, Cultural Studies and Mythology. His publication record includes articles, book chapters, and monographs, among which The Diachronic Representations of the OTHERWORLD Concept in the English Lingual Worldview (in Ukrainian, 2006) targeting myth-related semantic features of designation units verbalizing the concept of OTHERWORLD in the texts of various historic epochs, Mythic Space Through the Comparative Study of the Present-day English and Ukrainian (2009), an outline of fundamental methodological principles applied to the reconstruction of spatially arranged information constituting the irrational segment of the semiosphere, Designations of the ELEMENTS in the Mirror of the Mythic Space (2013), a multispectral linguo-semiotic analysis of the lingual signs denoting the ELEMENTS in different European languages, Language and Myth: an Interdisciplinary Study (2016), a booklength exploration of patterns of languages’, myths’ and cultures’ correlation from the standpoint of universalia-centered linguistics, and Introducing M-logic: Basic Remarks on Key Concepts (in English, 2017) that outlines theoretical premises of interdisciplinary studies treating off systemic universalia of lingual, mental, physical and cultural nature in the rational-analytic and irrational-synthetic dimensions.
