Media 'Tempests': Preliminary Notes to a Comparative Reading of Some Film Adaptations of the Eighties in Great Britain and the United States

Abstract

In this paper two British movies — Derek Jarman’s The Tempest (1980) and Peter Greenaway’s Prospero’s Books (1991) — will be compared to the American Mazursky’s (1982). Their different settings of the island, in particular, will reveal different cultural attitudes towards a number of issues: if the Greek island of Mazursky underlines the Atlanticism of the play associated to a realistic European recolonization, Jarman’s and Greenaway’s postmodern choices – although often in conflict — emphasize the dreamy, fantasmatic quality The Tempest shares with the movies.

Antonella Piazza, University of Salerno; University Suor Orsola Benincasa, Italy

Antonella Piazza is Associate Professor of English Language and Literature, teaching at the
University of Salerno and at the University Suor Orsola Benincasa, Naples. Her main
research area is Early Modernity. She published in 2000 a book on tragedy and the rise of the
modern nuclear family: Quarto: “Onora il Padre”. Tragedie domestiche sulla scena
elisabettiana [Fourth: “Honour thy Father”. Domestic Tragedies on the Elizabethan Stage].
Especially in and for the context of the group Shakespeare in Europe scholars, she wrote
extensively on the Shakespearean canon (in 2004 she edited Shakespeare in Europe), a number of essays on Shakespeare’s plays Coriolanus, Timon of Athens, but especially on The
Tempest. She has recently written on the movie adaptations of this play and in 2008 she
directed her students in a stage and multimedial rewriting of The Tempest, The Last Drop.
